Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
204 AM PDT Thu Mar 26 2026

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Temperatures drop 10-15 degrees today before warming up again
over the weekend with record highs again possible.

* Cooler north to northeast breezes prevail today, with lighter
winds Friday and more typical zephyr-type breezes this weekend.

* A shift to a cooler and wetter pattern with stronger winds
arrives next week, with increased chances of near or below
average temperatures by the start of April.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

With the dry cold front clearing the remainder of western NV
around daybreak, brisk/breezy N-NE flow (shifting to east for the
northern Sierra) will hold temperatures well below record levels
today. Highs settle to the mid-upper 60s for most lower
elevations and upper 50s-lower 60s for Sierra communities and
areas near the OR border. For a final wrap-up of this historic
March record heat streak, see the Climate section below.

A weak upper disturbance near the central CA coast will spread
thicker mid-high level cloud cover over eastern CA/western NV on
Friday. A few high resolution guidance sources even generate a
couple of brief showers over Mineral-E Mono counties late Friday
afternoon, but probability of any measurable rain is well below
10%. Otherwise, a modest temperature gain is expected Friday as
the end of cold air advection is partially offset by the thicker
cloud areas.

This weekend brings one more warmup as the overall cloud coverage
decreases (although we could see scattered PM cumulus mainly south
of US-50), with highs again near or above 80 degrees for lower
elevations. Daily records are most likely on Saturday which has
more reachable record highs of 76 degrees for Reno and 66 for
South Lake Tahoe, while Sunday`s will be more difficult (78 for
Reno and 70 for South Tahoe). Zephyr-type breezes (gusts 20-25
mph) are also anticipated for both days.

Next week continues to show a change to a cooler and wetter
pattern with periods of gusty winds as a more potent Pacific
storm approaches the west coast. In the spring season these storms
are more likely to show some form of split, resulting in a delayed
onset of precip reaching the Sierra. The latest guidance appears
to favor winds ramping up on Monday, with spotty light showers by
Monday night mainly limited to the northern Sierra and northeast
CA/northwest NV. Shower chances increase through Tuesday with some
cooling, although snow levels aren`t showing a very large drop,
generally holding near or above 7000 feet.

A more impactful and colder storm may follow by next Wednesday-
Thursday but the confidence has edged lower, due to a wider spread
of potential tracks with this system. The more aggressive
scenarios would bring winter travel impacts to the Sierra and even
a bit of snow down to some western NV valleys, but a few more
ensemble members are presenting drier scenarios where the storm
track remains too far north for much additional precip. Even with
these challenges in projecting the rain/snow amounts this far in
advance, the odds are still in favor of April starting out with
temperatures near or cooler than average and periods of increased
winds. MJD

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions prevail through this weekend, with areas of mid-
high level cloud coverage. The thickest overall cloud cover is
expected tonight through Friday.

FL100 winds shift from WSW to E by this afternoon with gusts up
to 35 kt, leading to localized areas of turbulence near the
Sierra crest through tonight. SFC wind gusts from the N-NE could
reach 15-20 kt for the western NV terminals this afternoon,
followed by lighter winds Friday and a return of modest zephyr-
type WSW breezes each afternoon this weekend. MJD

.CLIMATE...

This is the final planned update for the record high temperature
streak tables--behind the cold front passage, highs today will be
well below the daily records. The streak ended at 8 straight days
for Reno (just 1 degree short of a record on Wednesday), and will
end at 9 straight days for South Lake Tahoe.

Warmth returns this weekend with more daily record highs within
reach at both sites, while for the month we are on track to easily
surpass the previous record warmest average temperature for any
March. Even when comparing to April data, the monthly average for
March 2026 is currently in the top 3 for any April at both Reno
and South Lake Tahoe! The final monthly temperature values will be
available next Wednesday, April 1.
